Fremont County School District No. 24, is requesting $35,350 for an innovative educational opportunities grant. The funds will be utilized to implement a kindergarten through 6th grade computer science instructional program with a focus on professional development that we are calling Shoshoni Code Wranglers. Shoshoni Code Wranglers, brings content & performance standards to life through the utilization and learning of hydroponics, robotic gardening automation, coding, and data collection.
The intent of Code Wranglers is to help teachers integrate cross-curricular content infused with computer science fundamentals. Students will utilize computer science, microcontrollers, and coding to create and modify hydroponic growing environments. As a student moves through the grade levels they will build upon the foundations learned, modifying environment variables and tracking changes to plant growth based upon the changes in the environment. Our goal is to promote meaningful instruction, and targeted outcomes for both teachers and students.
Implementation of the Code Wranglers program will utilize innovation education grant funds for curriculum development, computer science professional development, acquisition of physical hardware, the practical application of applied science, and innovative skill building hand-on activities. Developing, enriching, and promoting a computer science foundation among elementary teachers and will lay the groundwork for a continuous computer science k-12 curriculum throughout the school district.
